Humboldt Earthquake Relief Resources

On December 20th, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Humboldt County in Northern California, leaving widespread damage to homes and roads, and tens of thousands without electricity. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency to support relief efforts, which provides Humboldt County access to resources under the California Disaster Assistance Act. How to Help As the county begins its recovery efforts, the following organizations are actively involved in providing immediate relief, assistance, and essential services to community members: Humboldt Area Foundation’s Disaster Response & Resilience Fund provides critical resources during disasters and aims to build capacity within the community to help mitigate future disasters. Through responsive grantmaking and deeply embedded nonprofit partnerships, the fund supports those most impacted to help the community recover from disaster. Food For People is designated as the official food bank for Humboldt County and operates several food pantries across the region. They have been working to reach residents most impacted in the communities of Rio Dell, Fortuna, Eureka to provide emergency supplies, including water, ready to eat meal kits, and nonperishable stables. Northern California Indian Development Council, Inc (NCIDC) is mounting a disaster assistance effort and accepting applications from income-eligible American Indian, Alaskan Native and Native Hawaiian households affected by the earthquake. NCIDC is assisting with the cost for hot water tank repairs, heating system repairs, and similar health and safety-related issues caused by earthquake damage. American Red Cross opened an emergency shelter in Fortuna in response to the earthquake. Trained Red Cross volunteers are at the shelter to provide residents with food, water, and a warm and safe place to stay while they await the restoration of electricity.
