Donor Spotlight: Ken & Diane Bishop

Earlier this year, CCF donors Ken and Diane Bishop and their families joined us to help welcome our neighbors home. At a housing development built and managed by People Assisting the Homeless (PATH), a CCF grantee and Home L.A. Fund partner, they assembled “Welcome Home Kits” for families moving out of homelessness and into supportive housing. We asked them why they are passionate about giving to long-term solutions to ending homelessness, read below for their response.

Diane: We grew up in this city, and we’re committed to making it a better place. I was downtown yesterday, and the number of homeless people, all the tents on the sidewalk, is at a level I’ve never seen.

Ken: How do you solve homelessness? You build homes. Get people off the streets and into a safe environment. Organizations like PATH may not be able to build enough homes for everyone, but you have to start somewhere. We want to help them get going. That’s why we invested in CCF’s Home L.A. Loan Fund.

Diane: I’m really impressed with the way PATH works with young single mothers, teaching them life skills, turning lives around one by one. It’s so much more than a band aid. Feeding people is important too, but we need to help people escape homelessness over the long term.

Ken: Philanthropy is great, but you need to give more than just money. You have to dedicate your time and see first-hand where your efforts are going.

Diane: Our kids are involved, too. Growing up, they watched us volunteer and give back, and now they’re philanthropic in their own right, giving money and serving on boards. It’s great to see that value continue in the family.

Ken: We’ve been so lucky, and we want to share our blessings with those who need them.
