Phung Huynh

Artist’s Statement

Phung Huynh is a Los Angeles-based artist and educator with a practice in drawing, painting, public art, and community engagement. Her work investigates notions of cultural identity from a kaleidoscopic perspective, a continual shift of idiosyncratic translations. The contemporary American landscape is where she explores how cultural ideas are imported, disassembled, and then reconstructed. Her reflections and research have guided Huynh to re-stitch traditional Asian iconography within the loosely woven fabric of American popular culture to call attention to [mis]interpretations and [re]appropriations. There is a purposeful “Chinatown” aesthetic in Huynh’s paintings, alluding to kitsch souvenirs that tourists purchase and the commodification of eastern icons into tchotchkes. Huynh considers how cultural authenticity disintegrates within a capitalist framework to challenge the viewer with a western-leaning perspective.

Huynh’s work continues to probe the questions of cultural perception and authenticity through images of the Asian female body vis-à-vis plastic surgery. She references Chinese feet-binding as one of the earliest forms of cosmetic surgery to contrast historical canons of Asian feminine beauty that venerate small feet, small eyes and small breasts with current trends of body image influenced by western beauty standards that endorse larger eyes, a taller nose, and larger breasts. Huynh is interested in how contemporary plastic surgery on Asian women have obscured ethnic and racial identity, and has also amplified the exoticism and Orientalist eroticism of Asian women.

Huynh’s current work is informed by her experience as a refugee of Cambodian and Chinese descent from Vietnam. Inspired by her family’s migration story, personal research, and interviews with Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees and immigrants, Huynh makes drawings and prints on pink donut boxes and cross-stitches images of personalized California license plates with unanglicized names. Her work unpacks the complexities of diaspora, immigration, displacement, and assimilation. Each drawing or cross-stitched piece is meant to be a sensitive portrayal of a unique personal story. Close to 90% of California’s donut shops are mom-and-pop businesses run by Cambodian immigrants or Cambodian Americans (Khmericans). The trend that links pink boxes with donuts can be traced back to the Khmerican donut ecosystem.

Ultimately, Huynh’s work is rooted in a practice to unravel ideas of cultural representations and stereotypes, to challenge how we consume and interpret ethnographic signifiers, and to de-center whiteness in constructing visual and historical narratives. With a strong commitment to community engagement and social practice, Huynh has completed significant public art projects throughout Los Angeles County. She has completed public art commissions for the Metro Orange Line, Metro Silver Line, the Los Angeles Zoo, and the Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center through the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture. Her most important public art project is Sobrevivir, a large-scale Corten steel floor sculpture that recognizes and expresses apologies to more than 200 mothers who were mostly Mexican immigrant women and coercedly sterilized at the LAC +USC Medical Center during the 1960s and 1970s. Phung Huynh is Professor of Art at Los Angeles Valley College where her focus is on serving disproportionately impacted students. She has served as Chair of the Public Art Commission for the city of South Pasadena and Chair of the Prison Arts Collective Advisory Council, which supports arts programming in California state prisons. She is currently on the Board of Directors for LA Más, a non-profit organization that serves BIPOC working class immigrant communities in Northeast Los Angeles. Huynh completed undergraduate coursework at the University of Southern California, received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with distinction from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and received her Master of Fine Arts degree from New York University.

Chair of Community-Based Art/Prison Arts Collective Advisory Council, 2017 – 2018
Chair of the advisory council that supports and gives recommendations to a vital program of California State University San Bernardino that provides art courses and workshops to underserved communities and prisons. Since 2013, CBA/PAC has provided weekly integrated arts classes to 1000+ individuals incarcerated in six state prisons. The classes are led by collaborative teams of faculty, students, and volunteers, and provide apprenticeships to university students and incarcerated artists. Prison Arts Collective, Guest Artist/ Co-Facilitator, 2017
Served as guest artist and co-facilitator for collaborative multidisciplinary workshops in two California State prisons, the California Institution for Men (CIM) and California Institution for Women (CIW) in Chino that was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and Arts-In-Corrections. Through discussions, reflections, and informed dialogues, participants selected a theme to make a work of art that integrated visual art, writing, and performance. The inspiration for the project was to create an artwork greater than anything that can be done by just one artist alone. The project was featured in an LA Weekly article, “How Art is Helping Southern California Prisoners Reconnect with Their Humanity,” written by Matt Stromberg. The project was also documented in images and writing and will be presented to the public online in 2018.
Brillo Box 3-Cents Off

Participated in the documentary film, Brillo Box 3-Cents Off by director and filmmaker, Lisanne Skyler that was featured on HBO and various film festivals throughout the United States. The documentary film was featured at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and followed by a panel discussion. Brillo Box 3-Cents Off follows the journey of the iconic Andy Warhol “Brillo Box” sculpture, once owned by filmmaker, Lisanne Sklyer’s parents, who bought it for $1,000 in 1969, traded it two years later only to see it auctioned off in 2010 for over $3 million.
