Mariah GarnettArtist’s Statement

I’m an artist and filmmaker living and working in Los Angeles. I mix documentary, narrative and experimental filmmaking practices to make films and installations that access existing people and communities beyond my immediate experience. Using source material that ranges from found text to actual people, I often insert myself into the films, creating cinematic allegories that codify and locate identity. The boundaries of adaptation, documentary and fiction are continually being drawn and re-drawn in my work. I hold an MFA from CalArts in Film/Video and a BA from Brown University in American Civilization. My work has exhibited and been screened internationally including the following venues: Venice Biennale (Swiss Offsite Pavillion), Rencontres Internationales (Paris, Madrid, Berlin, Beirut), Outfest (Los Angeles), Midway Contemporary Art (Minneapolis), Mix NYC, The Hammer Museum (Los Angeles), SF MoMA (San Francisco), White Columns (New York) and the Ann Arbor Film Festival.
