Linda StarkArtist’s Statement

At this time I am working on a group of six 3-foot square canvases, entitled Adorned Paintings, which are a further exploration of my interest in addressing the painting as body. For each painting I have designed adornments, either hand carved in wood/ polyform clay and attached, or built up with solid oil paint. In some of these paintings I use my body as the portrait of a woman. “Fixed Wave” is waist to yoni, adorned with a solid paint belly button ornament. In “Flower”, a 3D navel is surrounded with a swollen flower brand and bruises. In “Stigmata”, my palm is branded with the word “feminist”, as a bloody stigmata.

In my work, ideas that are esoteric, feminist, mythological, and pop are layered in meaning as a dream might be, springing from an autobiographical perspective. Concept and process are aligned as I investigate the physical properties of oil paint. Many of my techniques arise out of experimentation with paint in the studio and are inspired by the observation of processes found in nature. I often drip, build, and layer oil paint slowly, incrementally, over an extended period of time. A single painting can take up to three years to complete. Working in this way, the painting reveals a sense of geological time, and can resonate, invoke or contain the simultaneity of time, experientially. I strive for the creation of an alive object, which is both fetish and aesthetic presence.
