Dan Bayles

Dan BaylesArtist’s Statement

I moved to Los Angeles from the D.C. area in 2001, eager to exist within its diverse and vibrant cultural community. Once in Los Angeles I worked several jobs which broadened my knowledge of art world politics and technical skill sets by assisting professional artists, being an exhibition preparator for both galleries and museums, and becoming an asst. printmaker for a fine art publisher. My biggest challenge was finding time to make personal work and to equally find time to focus on how my work could function conceptually. After approximately five years I chose to give myself this time as well as exposure to the experience of professors and fellow students by going to graduate school. Along with the intensive focus on personal work, I was given the opportunity to learn from constant teaching assistantships as well as the chance to teach several painting classes. This experience enriched my personal work while giving me the chance to extend my knowledge to others.

Recent opportunities in the form of domestic and international exhibitions as well as successes of both a critical and commercial nature are incredibly encouraging as I continue to develop as an artist. I constantly challenge myself in trying to define what it means to make a successful work of art, continually learning and realizing that it is a definition which endlessly changes and evolves.
