Mallory’s Legacy Fund

Diane Shader Smith and Mark Smith are pleased to announce that Mallory’s Legacy Fund has been established in loving memory of Mallory Beatrice Smith, who passed away in November of 2017, two months after receiving a double-lung transplant.

Donations to Mallory’s Legacy Fund will be applied to support research projects and clinical trials that address antimicrobial resistance (AMR, which leads to superbugs) with a specific focus on phage therapy. Among the institutions we will fund are the Center for Innovative Phage Applications and Therapeutics (IPATH) at the University of California San Diego under the direction of Dr. Steffanie Strathdee and the Center for Phage Biology and Therapy at Yale under the direction of Dr. Paul Turner, Dr. Ben Chan, and Dr. Jon Koff.

Phage therapy is used to treat antibiotic-resistant bacteria – otherwise known as Superbugs. According to the CDC, more than 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant infections occur in the U.S. each year, and more than 35,000 people die as a result.
