Beautiful Friends and Extended Community,

June 12th, 2023 marks the fourth anniversary since a drunk driver took our precious Ruby and Hart from us. Since those horrific, earliest days we’ve been searching for the best way to honor their legacies of joy, empathy, and kindness through some form of lasting philanthropy. We’ve come to realize that many of their talents and interests, from Ruby’s art and short stories to Hart’s ridiculous improvised characters and love of acting, began in very early childhood with an activity that most of us take for granted: reading and being read to. Ruby and Hart’s full but far too short lives were profoundly enriched by stories and characters that fueled their imaginations and filled their hearts.

Since publishing her first childrens’ novel, Gail has had the privilege of working with Writers and Artists Across the Country, an incredible organization that brings authors of childrens’ literature into underserved schools across the nation. Authors give their time, and WAAC provides every child with their own copy of the author’s book. Gail has seen firsthand the excitement that her visits have brought, and the way students’ beautiful faces light up when they’re given their very own copy to take home. Your donations will go toward sending authors into underserved schools all over the country with giant boxes of books, each of which will contain a Ruby and Hart Foundation bookplate. Students will be able to experience the joy of writing their name in their very own book.

Our goal is to raise $250,000 dollars so The Ruby and Hart Foundation can become a fully endowed fund that can meaningfully contribute to WAAC and organizations like it in perpetuity. We’re doing this under the umbrella of the California Community Fund. Please help us fulfill this ambitious and meaningful goal by giving generously. All details as to how to make fully tax-deductible contributions and learn how WAAC fulfills their extraordinary mission can be found below.

With love and gratitude, Gail & Colin

The County of Los Angeles is committed to supporting the community during the health and economic crisis created by COVID-19. To meet this growing need, the Board of Supervisors, led by Chair Supervisor Kathryn Barger, created the County Fund for Los Angeles to enable individuals and private entities to donate funds to support residents and businesses in need, alongside existing County programs and resources. With the escalating and continuously changing landscape due to COVID-19, the County Fund for Los Angeles will help the most vulnerable through the following efforts:

1. Issue micro-grant opportunities to help underserved communities as part of the County’s economic recovery and response, and support and expand upon the policy priorities set forth by the Board of Supervisors.

2. Issue worker resiliency grants to jobseekers who work with the public workforce system to receive training, employment readiness, and additional supportive services as they seek employment.

3. Issue grants to small businesses (including nonprofits) for reopening, including assistance with financial oversight with the Small Business Administration and other programs.

Founded in 2019, the With You Foundation (WYF) is the passion project of Ebrahim (Ebi) and Mahshid Hamedi. For more than 50 years, Ebi has been the outspoken voice of a nation, inspiring millions of fans through his music. As Ebi and his oeuvre are banned from Iran (like countless other exiled Iranians and artforms), he needed to find an innovative way to reach and help the Farsi-speaking community. The With You Foundation was born as an avenue through which he and his wife, Mahshid — and their compassionate community — could use their positions to bring joy to those most in need.

Mission

With You Foundation is dedicated to enriching the lives of Farsi-speaking youth around the world by supporting the wishes of youth experiencing life-threatening health problems, and as such, foster hope, strength, and happiness.

Purpose
To support Farsi-speaking youth living with life-threatening health problems by working with nonprofit organizations to provide youth with wishes. Wishes can range from transformational experiences to much-needed resources to improve the physical and emotional well-being for each child.

Gibson InternationalAbout Gibson International Charitable Foundation

“The Gibson International Charitable Foundation strives to make the communities we serve into better places to live through active involvement and financial support for local organizations in need.” This is our mission statement and all of the agents at Gibson International have opened their hearts and embraced its message.

Throughout the year agents generously donate a portion of their commissions so that the Charitable Foundation can contribute to local organizations such as Heal the Bay, Dream Street Foundation, Venice Family Clinic, Guide Dogs of America, YWCA, Disabled American Veterans… and the list goes on and on.

In addition to the monetary donations, the agents at Gibson International also rally their efforts to donate household supplies to shelters, gather coats and blankets for the Mission Project downtown, make sandwiches for PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) and adopt Veteran Families during the Holidays. Giving back is part of who we are at Gibson International!!

Update for the Gibson International Charitable Foundation

Thanks to the generosity of the Gibson International agents, clients, family and friends, the Foundation was able to make grants to over 26 different local organizations to help people and animals in need.

During the Holiday Season the Gibson International Foundation continues to reach out to the community by adopting several veterans and their families and providing food and gifts to brighten their holidays, as well as donating coats and blankets to The Mission Project in downtown LA and collecting toys for children who might not otherwise receive a gift at the holidays.

About Us – What We Do:

erics-kids-logo

Eric’s Kids provides scholarships and grief support to at-risk children who have experienced the death of a parent. We ensure underserved kids affected by loss are provided a quality education and grief support so they will have an equal opportunity to succeed. The fund works primarily with the Catholic Education Foundation to provide financial support and services to children who would otherwise be unable to attend high quality, safe and nurturing Catholic elementary schools in their Los Angeles neighborhoods.

The mission is personal to our founder, Jennifer Caspar, who launched the nonprofit in memory of her late husband Eric Altshule, who died suddenly in 2010 when their daughters were ten and thirteen. Eric’s Kids aims to honor Eric’s love for his children, his passion for learning and for his fervent belief in the justice of educational equality.

PLEASE JOIN us at the 8th Eric’s Kids Annual Soccer Tournament.
Soccer, food, face painting, bouncy castles, live DJ, silent auction, raffle, and more! September 15th, Noon to 3:30pm @ Palms Park (2950 Overland Ave, LA)

Eric's KidsHow We Do It:

Since our founding in 2011, we have pursued our goal of providing quality education and grief support to under serviced children who have lost a parent in the following ways:

  • Fund Raising: We have brought in more than $307,000 in contributions from individuals, primarily through grassroots communication and free public events.
  • Tuition Assistance: We have funded 138 year long scholarships to more than 30 students.
  • Community Building: Through annual events, we invite our students to find kinship in the Eric’s Kids community among people who understand loss.
  • Bereavement Support and Education: We provide grief support education to the faculty at our participating schools.
  • One-on-one Meetings: We attempt to meet with each family at least once a year to understand each one’s individual needs and barriers to educational achievement. We work to connect families with other useful resources.
  • General Support: We provide holiday gifts to our students to remind them that they are valued, and that we are available for support when they need it.

It Takes a Village:

We carry out our mission through partnerships with nine schools as well as these three wonderful organizations.

California Youth ConnectionCalifornia Youth Connection (CYC) builds foster youth’s leadership and advocacy skills to improve California’s foster care system by promoting opportunities for foster youth to speak with policymakers and engaging youth in policy development. As the the only organization in California to engage foster youth in the policy-making process, CYC is now a national model.

Every year CYC serves more than 500 foster youth members, ages 14-24, through 30 chapters throughout the state. CYC members reflect the diversity of the state’s 72,557 foster youth, the majority of whom are of color and 100% of whom are low-income.

Special Needs Fund LogoThere are about 50,000 children in the foster care system in Los Angeles, most of whom have few, if any, financial resources. These children are eligible for financial assistance for special needs through the Special Needs Fund.

This fund was established in 2000 at the California Community Foundation to meet “special needs” — vital components of growing up that are out of reach for children in the foster care system. Special needs of the past have included: an article of clothing, a pair of glasses, limited dental care and tickets to a baseball game.

This fund is designed to fill in where no other resources are available to meet the needs of foster children. Judicial officers, attorneys and social workers may nominate a child in foster care for a grant up to $600 to supply childhood essentials.

Help us continue meeting the needs of these children.

The Special Needs Fund is a fiscal sponsorship fund of CCF Community Initiatives Fund, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation operated, supervised and controlled by the California Community Foundation.
